Ear Piercing Aftercare Instructions
Pain, redness and swelling are not a normal result of ear piercing and can lead to infection. Should pain, redness or swelling appear any time after 24 hours after the piercing, remove the earring and see your physician immediately. This is extremely urgent with cartilage piercing, as very serious infections and/or complications can result.
Warning it is vital that you faithfully follow all of the aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing of your newly pierced ears. Persistent redness or swelling indicates an infection or that your body cannot tolerate a foreign object.
Earlobe: leave the piercing earrings in for at least eight weeks.
Cartilage: leave the piercing earring in for at least twelve weeks.
During the healing period:
Always cleanse hands prior to touching your ears.
Cleanse the pierced area morning and evening using a clean cotton bud soaked with inverness ear care solution both sides of the ear.
To prevent the earrings from adhering to the ear, turn them completely around morning and evening after the ears have been cleansed with the ear care solution. Do not remove earrings while cleansing and turning.
After cleansing, check the earring back to ensure that it is positioned securely on the earring.
It is vital that the piercing is dried thoroughly after bathing, washing hair and swimming. Bacteria needs in moist environments and can cause severe infection. Immediately dry and cleanse with the aftercare lotion after using shampoo, hair products, spraying cologne, and after swimming/hot tub or exercise. Keep hair away from ears whenever possible during the healing period.
Take extra care when removing clothing over the head or brushing hair, so that earrings don’t get caught. Exercise care when participating in sports or rough play.
After the healing period:
For the first 9/10 months after your initial healing period it is vital that earrings are left in the holes overnight for at least 12 hours, this will prevent the hole from closing. Also during this period please remember to continue to dry the holes whenever they have been in contact with water.
You may want to file down the points of your earring posts with an emery board to make them blunt and more comfortable to insert and to avoid reopening the healed area. Whenever earring are inserted into the hole please remember to clean the earrings with aftercare lotion – you can do this quite simply by placing the aftercare lotion onto a tissue then wiping the earring post and butterfly.
Clean the earrings with inverness ear care solution each time earrings are reinserted.
Soreness and infections: in many cases returning to initial aftercare procedures will clear up an irritation in and around the piercing. Check is there a ring of moisture around the hole?
Please remember the hole’s must be dried whenever there is contact with water. Check to see if earrings are too tight. Loosen, if necessary, and increase cleansing with inverness ear care solution up to 5 times a day. If the problem continues, please contact us, do not remove earrings.
